“There is far too much yarn in this room.”
It really is true, though! I have just cast on for the Catalina shawl, and after the first three rows of the pattern, realised that I can’t go any further until I’ve printed the pattern out. Not unless I want to go mad, anyway. And I don’t have my own printer, so it will have to wait until next week sometime. So I put it down on the desk, except…it won’t quite go down. It is on top of the brightly coloured Regia socks of doom (on which I have now turned the heel of the second sock, so in the home straight!). They are on top of two balls of red yarn, one sock yarn, the other DK. Next to my bed are the bags from I Knit London, one containing some purple alpaca yarn, and the other something for my Secret Pal. On my bedside shelf is a barely begun pair of socks intended for my Dad’s Christmas present (in fact, I will probably frog them until I have the time and inclination to knit acres of black stocking stitch…) . On the other end of my desk is the rest of the yarn for my Dad’s socks, and some more yarn for my very lucky Secret Pal. On my bookshelf is the green Rowan yarn my Secret Pal sent me. And then there’s the random ends of stuff that I keep in my wardrobe with an unfinished knitted skirt and jumper. I also have part of a Hedera sock, and my Isabella that needs the sleeve trim added. This is very worrying, because I don’t think of myself as someone with too much yarn. Apparently, I am wrong.
Therefore, I am going to try to take control. I don’t actually approve of stash, or of unfinished objects. They annoy me, and this situation is annoying me. So, the plan is to make an ordered list, and to finish everything, and use all my yarn and then I can breathe a sigh of relief.
The first task will be to finish the Regia Socks of Doom (these, originally, were named my “Happy Feet Socks”, but I have changed my mind. I hate them. I just want them finished so that I can wear them!) .
The second task will be the sleeve edging on Isabella. That’s all that is left. It’s all sewn up and ready to go otherwise.
The third task will be to block and buy buttons for that skirt. That is all that’s left on it, and it has been unfinished for…oh, forever.
My fourth task will be the purple jumper. The body is done, and I have begun the sleeves, but I’m relatively certain that there is not enough yarn to finish it. So, I’m not sure, but I might frog it, and try to think of something else to do with the yarn. Maybe charity knitting, or blanket squares, perhaps. It isn’t yarn I bought because I loved it, it is yarn I bought because someone needed a knitted scarf, and they wanted it to be purple and machine washable.
Fifth will be the Hedera socks. Either to frog them, or to carry on with them. I do still want to make the Hedera socks, but my lovely Secret Pal sent me the recommended yarn, and as the current Hedera are being knitted in black and my Dad’s Christmas socks will feature black quite heavily, I might make myself go blind.
Sixth will be the Christmas socks for my Dad.
Seventh will be a pair of socks for my Mum, with yarn as yet unpurchased.
I do think I should consider some sort of blanket or rug for my yarn ends, because otherwise they’re just going to hang around taking up space.
